MAIN CAUSES OF TRUANCY

As we know, truancy is the action of the students to stay in another place instead of home without any justification. So, there are some many reasons for becoming a truant.

Acording to The Alameda County Disctrict Attorney's Office:

  • Homelessness: In over 20% of the cases, truant children were homeless.
  • Bullying: In 13% of cases, bullying was a contributing factor.
  • Home Environment: Family dysfunction was identified in 26% of cases.
  • Physical Health Issues: Those impacted students in 36% of cases.
  • Mental Health Issues: Those were as frequent as physical health issues.
  • Finance: In 26% of cases, the financial issues played a role in truancy.
  • Ineffective Parenting: The lack of rigth parent skills were noted in 45% of cases.
  • Transportation: 30% of children were truant because they lacked transportation.
In fact, those truant people constantly are affected by some many causes. Also, the vulnerable minority of teenagers with specific unnormal aspects and qualities are the most affected in the society.

The proffessors Iñaki Piñuel Zabala y Araceli Oñate have describe almost 9 labels of bullying with the following indicence among the victims.

  • Social block 29%
  • Harassment 21%
  • Manipulation 20%
  • Constraints 17%
  • Social Exclusion 16%
  • Intimidation 14%
  • Cyberbullying
Another fact is that the teenagers who belong to the lgbtiq+ community suffer discrimination and those kind of bullying, so they are affected to commit truancy.
In Latinamerica, Colombia portrays a report which shows how lgbtiq+ students face those issues in educative centers. The 67% said feeling insecure, consequently 1 of 4 students skip class because they are afraid.

Truancy rate at record high

The school truancy rate is at record high and has shot up by 44% since Labor came to power, government statistics revealed today.

The rise is despite ministers taking a tougher line on absenteeism, prosecuting 9,500 parents and fining thousands more because of their children regularly skip school.

Some 67,290 pupils skipped school without permission every day in 2008-9, almost 2,000 more than the previous year, the Department for Children, Schools and Families show figures.

Around 10 million school days were missed without permission by 6 million pupils in primary and secondary schools in England. The DCSF calculates absence rates by the number of half days missed. Pupils missed 1.05% of half-days at primary and secondary schools without permission, compared to 1.01% the previous year. This is a 44% rise on 1996-97, when the rate was 0.73%, which means truancy is now at its highest level since records were first collected in 1993.

The total authorised absence rate – where pupils have permission to miss school – fell to its lowest level recorded with children in all schools missing 5.21% of half-days in 2008-09, down from 5.28% in the previous year.

Family holidays were the second most common reason for pupils missing school, after illness.
Over two terms, absence for family holidays accounted for 8% of half-days that were missed, but authorised by schools. Nearly 2% of half-days missed for family holidays were not approved by schools.
David Laws, the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, branded the truancy figures "a disgrace" for Labour and said they showed the government's top-down approach to the problem had failed.
Laws said: "Despite Tony Blair promising to get a grip on this problem more than a decade ago, truancy levels have rocketed. It's obvious that Labour's top-down approach has failed. We need a more effective local approach involving parents, schools and the police.(Shepherd, 2012)

What is Truancy?

  • An unexcused absence from school
  • States enact school attendance laws which determine:
    • the age at which a child is required to begin attending school
    • the age at which a child may legally drop out of school
    • the number of unexcused absences which make a student legally truant
  • In many states, youth missing more than 10 days of school are required to repeat the entire school year.
  • Truancy is a major problem nationwide, yet states do little to prevent it and little to re-engage truant youth.

Preventing Truancy

Preventing truancy requires a multifaceted approach that considers the school, the parents, and the youth.
Rather than just punishing truancy with suspension, schools are finding it more effective to develop programs to work with these students. The most effective programs include:
  • mentoring
  • law enforcement involvement
  • communication training
  • community involvement
The role of the school starts with clearly communicating attendance policies and upholding them. Schools also need to keep proper records, communicate problems to parents, and work to improve poor conditions in the school. Staff should work to ensure that students are matched with the right teachers and are getting special attention when necessary.
Outside of the school, preventing truancy begins at home, with open communication and problem solving. This will help to determine the cause of the absenteeism.
If you are the parent of a truant child, talk to school administrators to find ways to solve the problem. In some cases, transferring classrooms or even a new school may help. Rather than just punishing, finding actionable solutions is often effective in reducing truancy.

Relevant factors that have influence to be a truant

The factors that contribute to truancy eventually originate from three central areas: the school, the family and the community. The experiences lived by a young person in all these areas will have a strong impact on truancy percentages.

As: Personal Matters, bullying's issues and bad influences around the school or the community of those teenagers.

How can we prevent truancy?

Strategies are needed to keep kids in school and parents aware of what is going on. Because of technology and with the help of computers, students are easier to keep track of and follow than ever before for example with the GPS programs.
Students may stay away from school for a variety of reasons, some may be very simple reasons such as; fear of someone, learning issues, or lack of parental support. Others may be deeper and darker reasons, drug use, abuse, or lack of a parent at home.
